Author of a MyJoyOnline publication proposes dividing mathematics into specialized tracks
In Ghana, the author of a MyJoyOnline publication proposed considering different tracks for studying mathematics at a certain stage of secondary education. One of them could be advanced for future engineers and specialists in mathematics-intensive disciplines, while another could focus on practical mathematics and financial literacy.
The author notes that thousands of humanities students struggle with mathematics every year: some repeatedly fail the subject, while others lose opportunities to enter university because of it. In his view, the problem may lie not only with students, but also with the content of the compulsory curriculum and the method of assessment.
Different needs of future professionals
The article compares two hypothetical students: Sefa, who aspires to become an actor and broadcast journalist, and Glovus, who wants to be an engineer. The author believes that both need mathematical training, but its depth and practical purpose may differ.

For a future engineer, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and more complex mathematical reasoning are described as important. At the same time, for those who will work in media, creative industries, services, public service or entrepreneurship, calculations involving contracts, commissions, taxes, budgets, loans, investments and statistics may be more regular.
Practical mathematics
The author proposes paying more attention to percentages, profit and loss, markups and margins, taxes, exchange rates, inflation, loans, savings, insurance, depreciation, cash flow and basic statistics. In his view, students should understand the difference between revenue, profit and cash, as well as be able to compare loan offers.
Practical mathematics and financial literacy are proposed to be built around accounting, commerce, entrepreneurship, personal finance, statistics and quantitative decision-making. At the same time, the author emphasizes that all students should acquire solid basic mathematical skills, including knowledge of the Pythagorean theorem.
