Barack and Michelle Obama announce death of dog Sunny — TimesLIVE
In the United States, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama announced the death of their Portuguese water dog, Sunny. The couple called her a beloved member of the family. They wrote about this on Instagram, TimesLIVE reports.
Sunny was with the Obamas for 13 years
Sunny joined the Obama family in 2013, at the beginning of Barack Obama’s second presidential term in the White House. Another Portuguese water dog belonging to the family, Bo, was already living there.
Bo died of cancer in 2021 at the age of 12. Both dogs often appeared in official family photographs and became popular with the public.

An energetic and devoted dog
The Obamas recalled that they immediately loved Sunny, although it was not easy for them to keep up with her energy. According to them, she was athletic and tireless, jumping over hedges on the White House South Lawn and chasing squirrels, birds and everything that moved.
Unlike Bo, who could be won over with treats, Sunny loved active games, when people ran with her, rolled around on the floor or rubbed her belly. She loved the Obamas’ daughters and members of their team, and was also very protective of Bo.
The couple also recalled Sunny’s unusual habits: she preferred people to other dogs, drank water loudly and did not like swimming, despite belonging to the Portuguese water dog breed. According to the Obamas, Sunny was with them for 13 years and remained loyal, affectionate and ready for adventure until her final days.
