Berlin Is Losing Its Appeal Among Germans — Survey
Only 31% of respondents consider Berlin to be a “fascinating metropolis,” according to a survey by the Allensbach Institute published by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. At the same time, 36% of the 1,039 people surveyed said that Germany’s capital lacks charisma, according to Deutsche Welle.
Compared to the Allensbach Institute’s previous survey in 2007, Berlin’s ratings have declined significantly. At that time, 66% of respondents described the city as exciting, while 14% believed it lacked appeal.

Former Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit once described the city as “poor but sexy.” According to DW, tens of thousands of workers have moved to the capital, and rent has risen significantly. This has increased pressure on Berlin’s famous nightclubs, many of which are being forced out by developers due to rising real estate costs.
Survey participants named Hamburg—48%—and Munich—47%—as Germany’s most attractive cities. Berlin scored 46% in response to the question of which cities respondents would not want to live in. Based on this metric, it shared the title of least desirable city to live in with Frankfurt am Main.
