Bill Gates Proposed a Tax on Robots Due to the Threat Posed by AI
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has called on governments to review the current tax system in light of the rapid development of artificial intelligence and robotics.
The billionaire believes that automation could leave millions of people unemployed. In his view, a tax on robots and AI could slow the replacement of workers by machines, and the revenue generated could be used to support people who lose their jobs.
According to Gates, the current tax system effectively creates a financial incentive for companies to replace workers with automated systems. When a business hires a person, it pays taxes on that person’s salary. In contrast, the purchase of a robot can be treated as a business expense.
Gates believes this situation needs to change. He proposes taxing robots and the use of AI, and using the revenue to help people who lose their jobs due to automation through retraining and social programs. At the same time, he acknowledges that a tax alone will not be enough to solve the problem.
Gates Fears Mass Job Losses
The billionaire warns that AI could transform the labor market much faster than previous technological revolutions. It’s not just office jobs that will be at risk. After sales, customer support, legal services, and programming, automation could spread to construction, the service sector, and other professions.
Gates sees a separate problem in the fact that not all workers will be able to retrain quickly. He cited the example of a 55-year-old construction worker who, after losing his job due to automation, might be offered a completely different profession. According to Gates, simply telling people to “find another job” will not solve the problem for many people.
