B’nai Brith Canada calls for stronger security at Jewish institutions — Jerusalem Post
Canadian organization B’nai Brith Canada has called for legislative changes so that synagogues can hire armed, qualified security guards, as well as for a permanent police presence at all Jewish institutions in the country. The Jerusalem Post reports this, citing a statement by the organization.
Security demands
B’nai Brith Canada said that governments should allocate targeted funding for law enforcement resources to guarantee a sufficient police presence at every Jewish institution in Canada. The proposals also concern community centers. The organization stressed that most such facilities do not have protection in the form of a permanent law enforcement presence.

B’nai Brith Canada CEO Simon Wolle told CTV News that the Jewish community can no longer wait for authorities to act to protect vulnerable sites. He also noted that the financial and organizational burden of protecting community infrastructure should not be placed on the communities themselves.
Shooting near synagogue
The call came after an incident on Yom Kippur near the Sons of Jacob synagogue in Belleville. According to the publication, an armed man exchanged gunfire with a police officer, seriously wounding the officer. B’nai Brith Canada called the incident an attempted mass murder targeting those present who were observing the holiest day of the Jewish calendar.
