British Man Accused of Passing Information on Drone Factories to Russia Stands Trial — Reuters
The trial of 31-year-old British citizen Joshua Cummidge, who is accused of aiding a foreign intelligence service and plotting sabotage, has begun in London. According to the prosecution, he passed information to Russia about four drone manufacturing plants located near his home in Swindon, in western England.
The prosecution also alleges that the defendant agreed to carry out a sabotage operation.
On September 10, Cummidge appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London. Prosecutor Warren Stenier stated that during police questioning, the man had previously denied the charges.
According to the prosecution, Cummidge was in contact with the so-called “GRU Volunteer Corps,” which, the prosecution alleges, was controlled by Russian military intelligence.
From August 28 to September 3, according to investigators, the British national communicated with a British citizen who had traveled to Russia to fight against Ukraine. The main topic of these conversations, according to the prosecutor, was the locations of drone manufacturing plants in Britain and possible sabotage operations against them.
The prosecution also alleges that Kammidge sought information about a Wi-Fi jamming device and conducted reconnaissance of the area. According to Stenier, additional evidence of a possible assignment from Russian intelligence services includes the man’s conversations with a former partner and a colleague whom he trusted.
Kammidge was arrested last week in Swindon by counterterrorism police. The court remanded him in custody.
The next hearing in the case is scheduled for September 25 at the Central Criminal Court in London, known as the Old Bailey.
The Russian Embassy in London has not commented on the case.
