A British-Irish power cable was rerouted to go around Dobby's grave from *Harry Potter*
Plans for the construction of a power cable between the United Kingdom and Ireland had to be altered so that its route would not pass through a location that “Harry Potter” fans refer to as “Dobby’s grave.” Simon Landlem, CEO of Etchea Energy, the company working on the project, recounted this curious incident.
The cost of the 190-kilometer Greenlink Connector cable was estimated at nearly 500 million euros. It was supposed to go out to sea from Freshwater West Beach in southwestern Wales.
It was on this very beach that the scene of Dobby the house-elf’s death and burial was filmed for the movie *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1*. After the film’s release, the location became popular among fans of the series. They leave painted stones and socks there—a reference to the plot in which Dobby received a sock and was freed from the Malfoy family.
The cable route has already been approved by local authorities. However, even before construction began, Landlem told BBC News about the planned route, after which the company received hundreds of calls from people concerned about it passing through “Dobby’s grave.”
According to Landlem, at first he didn’t even know who Dobby was. After his colleagues explained the significance of the site, he discussed the possibility of changing the route with the designers.
As a result, the cable was rerouted to bypass the site, which is popular among fans.
“Many people were very happy about this, and now the project is up and running, and Dobby is happy,” Landlem said.
The Greenlink Connector was launched in 2025. According to Euronews, it can supply electricity to about 380,000 homes—without passing through the symbolic “Dobby’s grave.”
