Mexico News Daily CEO talks about working with summer interns

Mexico News Daily CEO Travis Bembenek shared the experience of working with two summer interns at the publication’s office in San Miguel. According to him, working with Jared and Zella gave the team an opportunity to see how young people interested in journalism view artificial intelligence, reading and writing.

Jared grew up in the Chicago area, studies journalism at the University of Washington in Seattle and is interested in sports journalism. Zella was born in Manhattan, moved with her family to San Miguel at the age of six months, and has been attending a boarding school in California for the last three years of high school. During her final year, she will be editor-in-chief of the school newspaper.

AI in the interns’ work

Bembenek noted that both interns saw artificial intelligence as both a convenient tool and a risk of becoming overly dependent on it. At Mexico News Daily, they were not allowed to use AI to write articles, but were allowed to use it for research.

According to the publication’s head, the interns did not want to discuss in detail how AI could affect journalism, the news industry and their career prospects. He also expressed concern that young people more often consume information through videos on TikTok and Instagram rather than read books.

Reading and writing

Bembenek said that Jared answered his question by saying that he had probably never read nonfiction books. After that, the executive gave him Edward Shawcross’s “The Last Emperor of Mexico,” about Emperor Maximilian, and Michael Easter’s “Comfort Crisis,” about the benefits of embracing discomfort. According to Bembenek, Jared liked the first book.

At the same time, the CEO noted that both interns enjoyed writing. Mexico News Daily plans to invite interns again next summer.
