A workers’ holiday on different dates
Labour Day in Australia is dedicated to the labour movement and the struggle for workers’ rights, rather than to a political party. One of the movement’s key dates was 21 April 1856, when stonemasons in Melbourne protested, demanding an eight-hour working day.
New South Wales and Victoria passed the Eight Hours Act in 1916. The Commonwealth Court of Conciliation and Arbitration approved a nationwide 40-hour, five-day working week in 1948.
