Denmark will call for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine at the UN Security Council
Denmark, which holds the presidency of the UN Security Council in August, plans to push for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine. The country also intends to keep the issue of Russian aggression among the Security Council’s top priorities.
The Danish government emphasized that during its presidency, it will pay special attention to finding ways to end the war and maintaining international pressure on Russia.
According to the Security Council president, Denmark is leading the Security Council “at a time of profound uncertainty for international peace and security,” when conflicts are escalating, suffering is increasing, geopolitical tensions are mounting, and political solutions remain elusive in many regions.
Lassen noted that the Security Council is expected to hold a meeting on Ukraine in August.
“As in many previous months, we will continue to seek to draw attention to Sudan and Ukraine, where, in our view, the Security Council’s involvement remains particularly urgent,” she said.
Speaking about Ukraine, Lassen emphasized: “We will maintain our call for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, as well as our unwavering support for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in accordance with the UN Charter, while firmly keeping the issue of the consequences of Russian aggression on the Security Council’s agenda.”
According to the diplomat, one of the key events of her country’s presidency will be a high-level open debate on August 25 dedicated to the link between conflicts and hunger.
Lassen noted that Denmark will also closely monitor the situation in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon.
In addition, she said, a new phase in the selection of a candidate for the post of UN Secretary-General is expected in August. Denmark plans to hold the next round of informal consultations in the Security Council on August 21.
