The shortage of missiles for the Patriot system has created new risks for Ukraine

The shortage of missiles for the Patriot system has created new risks for Ukraine

Journalists at The Guardian report that the global shortage of interceptor missiles for Patriot systems is creating additional opportunities for Russia to intensify its air strikes on Ukraine. Analysts warn that the shortage of these munitions could persist for several more years and affect not only Ukraine but also the security of U.S. allies.

Experts also attribute the problem to slow production ramp-up and unforeseen expenditures during other military conflicts, which have depleted global stocks of interceptor missiles.

The global shortage of interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems has become one of the factors that, according to The Guardian, Russia is actively exploiting to intensify its airstrikes on Ukraine, counting on the limited capabilities of Western air defense in the long term.

The publication notes that the U.S. and its allies are trying to ramp up interceptor production, but this process is slow and technically complex, so the shortage will persist for at least another two to three years, even with the production expansion programs already underway. “Increasing production takes years,” analysts stress, emphasizing that this is a structural problem of the defense industry, not a short-term glitch.

According to experts, the shortage is hitting Ukraine and the Gulf states—which rely heavily on U.S. air defense systems—the hardest, but in the long term, it could also impact NATO’s strategic planning as a whole. The article also notes that the Patriot remains one of the most effective means of countering ballistic missiles today, while European equivalents are not yet capable of fully replacing it in terms of effectiveness.

Analysts explain that the shortage arose due to a combination of several factors: a reduction in production stocks in recent years, errors in long-term defense procurement planning, and a sharp increase in spending during other military crises around the world. In particular, experts estimate that the intensive use of missiles during recent military campaigns in various regions had a significant impact, substantially reducing the available stockpiles of interceptors among U.S. allies.

Against this backdrop, Ukraine remains one of the key users of Patriot systems in Europe, and the issue of their supply and ammunition replenishment is increasingly becoming a matter of global security, rather than just Russia’s war against Ukraine. The Guardian reports on this.
