The U.S. delegation walked out of the UN Security Council meeting during France's statement
The U.S. delegation walked out of the UN Security Council meeting on the war waged by Russia, the aggressor state, against Ukraine during France’s statement. This occurred amid a public dispute between allies over a vote to extend the mandate of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, according to France 24.
U.S. Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Dan Negri stated that the U.S. delegation would walk out during France’s statements until Paris abandoned what he called condescending and disrespectful rhetoric. He also called the French comments politicized and insincere.
The day before, France criticized Washington for voting against extending Türk’s mandate for another four years. The French side noted that the U.S. voted alongside Russia, North Korea, and seven other countries. On Friday, the UN General Assembly supported the extension of the mandate: 144 countries voted in favor, 10 against, and 13 abstained.

U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz stated that France supports a human rights official who, in his words, criticizes democratic countries—including the U.S. and Israel—while turning a blind eye to the world’s worst oppressors. Volker Türk has publicly criticized Russia’s war against Ukraine and Israel’s actions in Gaza, and has also called for an investigation into deaths in custody within the U.S. immigration system.
UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq declined to comment on the U.S. delegation’s walkout from the session. He noted that the UN expects all member states to respect the decision adopted by the General Assembly.
