Ghanaian MP questions EOCO’s role in determining lawyers’ fees — MyJoyOnline

Ghanaian Member of Parliament for the Manyhia South constituency Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has questioned the authority of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to regulate or determine lawyers’ professional fees. He stated this in a Facebook post on September 26, MyJoyOnline reports.

MP’s statement

According to Awuah, he had previously been accused of refusing to comply with an EOCO invitation. Afterwards, the MP claims, allegations emerged that he had supposedly charged unapproved professional fees.

Awuah questioned the basis for these allegations and asked whether regulating or setting lawyers’ professional fees falls within EOCO’s competence.

Denial of payments

The MP also rejected claims that, out of 5 million Ghanaian cedis, 2.2 million cedis had been paid to him or his law firm, SBA and Partners, as legal service fees.

In addition, Awuah denied that he or SBA and Partners had transferred funds to the then head of SIC Life Savings and Loans. He also rejected information about a court-ordered sale of property for 24 million Ghanaian cedis, stating that no such sale took place. Therefore, he said, there could not have been a transfer of 6 million cedis from the alleged buyer to him or his firm.
