Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings’ daughter honors her legacy in Ghana — MyJoyOnline

Yaa Asantewaa Agyeman-Rawlings, Executive Director of the J. J. Rawlings Foundation, honored the memory of her mother, former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, at the presentation of the Sheroes of Africa Coffee Table Book in Accra, Ghana. She described her as a determined public figure who devoted her life to the political, social and economic development of communities across the country.

Work with communities

According to Yaa Asantewaa Agyeman-Rawlings, her mother did not limit her work to the capital and personally visited communities throughout Ghana. She listened to people, mobilized and organized them, and worked directly on the ground.

The former first lady’s daughter noted that Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings’ legacy belongs not only to her family, but also to the women whose confidence she strengthened, the communities whose horizons she expanded, and the young people who saw her as an example of courage and resilience.

Supporting women’s participation in politics

Yaa Asantewaa Agyeman-Rawlings also recalled that in the mid-1980s, her mother supported the decentralization policy of the Provisional National Defence Council through the 31st December Women’s Movement. She traveled across the country, explaining to communities the benefits of local governance, and encouraged women, including her organizers, to run in district elections and join public service.

As MyJoyOnline reports, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was included in writer Princess Flossy Tachi-Menson’s book dedicated to 100 influential African women. The event was chaired by former Malawian President Joyce Banda, who heads the Sheroes Foundation.
