Johnson sees no need for a congressional vote on the war in Iran
U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson stated that he does not currently see a need for Congress to vote on a resolution authorizing the use of military force in connection with the war in Iran.
According to “European Truth,” citing CNN, Johnson made this statement on Tuesday, July 21. He said that the main priority is to find a solution to the conflict, which has been ongoing for several months.
“The Commander-in-Chief and the entire Department of Defense are making significant efforts to find a solution to this situation. Active discussions are underway regarding how this will be done. We are all, of course, closely monitoring developments. I do not believe it is appropriate at this time to adopt [a resolution authorizing the use of military force]. In my opinion, we need to bring this situation to a resolution,” said the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Johnson also stated that “the Iranians cannot be trusted.” He claims that whenever the parties believe they have reached a certain agreement, Iran “betrays the trust of the people on the other side of the table” almost immediately.
Earlier, media reports indicated that U.S. President Donald Trump had officially notified Congress of the resumption of military strikes against Iran, reserving the right to attack Tehran for 60 days without legislative approval. The media also reported that officials see two possible outcomes: a new 10-day ceasefire or a large-scale joint military operation with Israel to force Tehran to capitulate.
