Former Foreign and Home Secretary James Cleverly to run for London mayor

Former UK Foreign Secretary and Home Secretary James Cleverly has left the Conservative Party’s shadow cabinet to run for mayor of London. He is immediately stepping down from his duties as shadow secretary for housing, communities and local government.

Resignation from the shadow cabinet

Cleverly announced his decision to the Sunday Times newspaper. According to The Guardian World, his resignation came ahead of the Conservative Party conference scheduled for October.

It is expected that at the conference, the politician will present his candidacy for mayor of London to party members. Cleverly previously served as the Conservative Party’s home secretary and foreign secretary.

Election in 2028

The next London mayoral election is due to take place in May 2028. The incumbent mayor, Sadiq Khan, is in the middle of his third term in office. He has not yet said whether he will seek a fourth term.
