An investigation has confirmed that a Russian drone struck a high-rise building in Romania

The investigation into the high-profile incident involving a drone crash into a residential building in Romania on May 29 has concluded with official confirmation of its origin. Experts have clearly established that a Russian "Geran-2" strike drone, which is a direct counterpart to the Iranian "Shahed," crashed into the building.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan announced this on his official page on social media platform X.

During a comprehensive technical examination, Romanian military and civilian experts discovered Cyrillic markings on the surviving fuselage debris reading “Geran-2.” In addition to visual indicators, experts conducted a detailed analysis of the UAV’s internal components: electronic components, satellite navigation modules, control units, the engine, and specific structural elements. The results showed a perfect match with those Russian aerial attack systems previously recorded during violations of the country’s airspace. The head of state emphasized that this incident is particularly serious, as it resulted in material damage to civilian infrastructure and injuries to people, and that full responsibility for these aggressive actions lies entirely with Russia.

Niculescu Dan noted that Bucharest will immediately share all official findings and evidence from the investigation with international partners and allies in the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) for a joint response. The president emphasized that the Romanian authorities will take an uncompromising stance and do not intend to downplay or ignore such incidents. Any further threats to the lives of Romanian citizens, the state’s sovereignty, or its national security from the Russian Federation will be met with the harshest possible response.
