Former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is leaving Parliament
Former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his decision to leave the House of Commons. The former prime minister announced his departure from the British Parliament after concluding his political career as head of government.
Starmer is stepping down as the Member of Parliament for the Holborn and St. Pancras constituency, a position he has held for 11 years.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to represent the best constituency in the country since I took over this seat from the great Frank Dobson 11 years ago,” Starmer wrote.
The former prime minister said that after ending his career in Parliament, he plans to “focus on other issues: international affairs, particularly defense, security, trade, and technology in a rapidly changing world.” In addition, Starmer intends to continue fighting violence against women and girls.
Because Starmer is leaving Parliament, the U.K. will be forced to hold a by-election in his district in central London.
“The process of appointing my successor ahead of the by-election will now begin. Whoever is fortunate enough to become the Labour Party candidate here will have my full support and assistance, and I will continue to give my full support to the prime minister and this Labour government,” the former prime minister emphasized.
The by-election in the Holborn and St. Pancras district could weaken the Labour Party if Zach Polanski—a fairly popular leader of the Green Party—runs for Parliament.
He announced this on X.
Starmer assured that Britain will continue to support Ukraine.
On July 16, British Prime Minister Kir Starmer arrived in Ukraine on an official visit. In Kyiv, he will meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and confirm that London’s support for Ukraine will remain unchanged even after his upcoming resignation.
