The former president of Moldova explained the reason for his visit to St. Petersburg

Igor Dodon, leader of the Party of Socialists of Moldova and the country’s former president, commented on his trip to Russia to attend the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

The politician stated that he sees no problem with attending the event and stands by the remarks he made during the forum. Dodon’s trip sparked debate and criticism from his opponents due to the participation of Russian officials, including Vladimir Putin, in the event.

In response to criticism of his trip to Russia, particularly from the speaker of the Moldovan parliament, Dodon stated that he sees nothing wrong with his actions or his remarks regarding the need to “resume dialogue” with Russia and restart purchases of Russian gas.

"Our colleagues in the government need to understand that the situation is changing, and we need to follow the example of some European leaders who are increasingly talking about the need to start negotiations with Russia," said the Socialist leader, adding that relations with Russia should be guided by “Moldova’s economic and energy interests, not geopolitics.”

"I am firmly convinced that at a certain stage—I don’t know how many weeks or months it will take—colleagues in the government, Mr. Grosu (the speaker of parliament), and others will say that we need to talk to Russia," he added.

This was reported by Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko.
