The EU has fined AliExpress a record 550 million euros
The European Commission has fined the AliExpress platform 550 million euros for failing to adequately combat the sale of illegal, dangerous, and counterfeit goods.
The decision was made in accordance with the EU Digital Services Act (DSA). The European Commission stated that the platform failed to adequately assess risks, was ineffective at detecting illegal goods, and did not ensure effective oversight of sellers.
The regulator also criticized AliExpress’s recommendation algorithms and advertising systems, which, in its assessment, contributed to the spread of prohibited goods. These include counterfeit products, dangerous toys, and cosmetics.
If the company fails to remedy the violations by October 20, it could face new fines.
AliExpress stated that it disagrees with the European Commission’s decision, called the sanctions disproportionate, and said it is considering further legal action.
