EU approves first joint defence projects — Anadolu Agency

In Türkiye on September 28, the European Council approved the first five European Defence Projects of Common Interest. They are intended to strengthen the European Union’s defence readiness and the production capacities of its defence industry, Anadolu Agency reports.

Areas of joint development

The projects will bring together EU member states to develop drones and counter-drone systems, protect maritime areas and the seabed, develop space capabilities, and strengthen air and missile defence. Protection of the EU’s eastern flank has been designated as a separate area.

European Defence Projects of Common Interest were introduced under the European Defence Industry Programme, which the EU adopted in 2025. Their mechanism provides for the joint development of military capabilities that are critical to the bloc’s security and defence interests and are too large-scale or complex to be implemented by a single country.

Funding through the defence programme

The five approved projects can now apply for funding under the European Defence Industry Programme. It is intended to support their initial deployment and create a basis for possible additional funding through the planned European Competitiveness Fund.

European Commissioner for Defence Andrius Kubilius said that the decision demonstrates Europe’s ability to be ambitious and deliver on its promises. According to him, member states, with EU support, are pooling their efforts, expertise and investments to develop the necessary capabilities.
