The EU has imposed sanctions on Russian General Demurchiev

The European Union has imposed sanctions on Russian Major General Roman Demurchiev, who is believed to be involved in serious human rights violations and war crimes committed during the war against Ukraine.

The EU Council’s decision states that Demurchiev was involved in the torture and execution of Ukrainian prisoners of war, as well as in the desecration of the bodies of fallen Ukrainian defenders.

The sanctions were based, in particular, on facts revealed by journalists from the “Schemes” and “System” projects. In their investigation, they presented evidence of the Russian general’s probable involvement in the killings of prisoners, torture, and other war crimes.

Following the publication of the investigation, the collected materials were handed over to Ukrainian law enforcement agencies for further investigation.

Subsequently, on July 19, U.S. President Donald Trump requested that the scope of this law be expanded to include Iran. Senators, in turn, took this into account, according to Axios.

Earlier, the European Union approved its 21st package of sanctions against Russia in response to its aggression against Ukraine. The new restrictions target the financial sector, the energy sector, the military-industrial complex, the shadow fleet, and schemes to circumvent sanctions.
