The European Commission has approved Hungary's accession to the European Public Prosecutor's Office

The European Commission has officially approved Hungary’s accession to the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO). The country will become the 25th member of the body, which investigates crimes related to the use of EU budget funds.

The European Commission noted that the decision demonstrates Hungary’s renewed commitment to the principles of the rule of law. Once the decision takes effect, the EPPO will have a permanent office in the country to combat fraud, corruption, and other financial crimes that harm the EU budget.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the decision, stating that it will be an important step toward protecting European funds in the interests of Hungarian citizens.

The decision will take effect 20 days after its publication in the EU’s Official Journal. After that, Hungary must submit three candidates for the position of European Public Prosecutor, one of whom will be approved by the Council of the EU.

Hungary has restored access to a number of Ukrainian news websites that had been blocked in response to reciprocal restrictions imposed by Kyiv. The decision marks a step toward partially unblocking the flow of information between the two countries following a media conflict.

Hungary initiated the removal of language regarding Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the EU from the final declaration of the European Union summit.
