European Parliament to open office in Canada

The European Parliament will open an office in Ottawa, Canada, which will work alongside the existing European Union delegation in the country. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced the decision on September 14, Politico Europe reports.

Office in Ottawa

The initiative was supported by the European Parliament's leadership. Parliament representatives will work in an “antenna office” alongside the EU delegation in Canada, which is led by the European External Action Service.

According to Metsola, the stronger presence should promote parliamentary exchanges across the Atlantic, while the office's regional scope of work will extend to the Arctic. A European Parliament press release said that the office will also become a platform for parliamentary engagement on issues gaining strategic importance for both the EU and Canada.

Mark Carney's visit

The announcement came two days before Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's planned visit to Strasbourg. On Wednesday, he is expected to attend the State of the European Union address at the European Parliament headquarters, and on Thursday, to address the European Parliament.

According to Politico Europe, the Canadian prime minister is heading to Europe to deepen ties with partners while Ottawa is engaged in a trade war with Washington. The European Parliament has an office in Ukraine, opened in September 2025, as well as a presence in other countries outside the EU: Ethiopia, for relations with the African Union; Moldova; the United Kingdom; Indonesia; the United States; and Panama.
