The European Union has removed Kyrgyzstan from its aviation blacklist

The European Union has removed Kyrgyzstan from the list of airlines prohibited from operating flights to EU countries and transiting through their airspace.

This was reported by the Office of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, citing an official statement from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport. The decision was adopted by the EU Air Safety Committee following a meeting held in May 2026, and it will soon be formalized in a separate European Commission regulation.

The country had been subject to strict EU aviation restrictions for 20 years—since 2006—due to serious problems with its flight safety oversight system and the civil aviation sector’s failure to meet international standards. The lifting of sanctions became possible following a large-scale internal reform, the strengthening of state oversight, and the alignment of national aviation standards with the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The European Commission highly commended the progress made, based on the results of technical consultations, an assessment visit by European inspectors in March 2026, and successful hearings in Brussels.
