Fico does not want Slovakia to be drawn into a war under NATO Article 5
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that his country’s membership in NATO is important, but he does not want Slovakia to be drawn into a military conflict in the event that Article 5 of the Alliance is invoked.
At the same time, in his speech, the Slovak prime minister did not refer to Russia as an aggressor nation.
Fico also expressed concern over what he considers to be overly bellicose rhetoric in Europe. According to him, the risk of a large-scale military conflict on the continent is currently extremely serious.
“Sometimes there’s a tendency to mask our inability to solve problems such as illegal migration, competitiveness, and high energy prices by resorting to this bellicose talk: ‘Come on, let’s fight. For heaven’s sake, who do we want to fight? Who?” Fico said.
Separately, the Slovak prime minister commented on Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which enshrines the principle of NATO’s collective defense.
“I don’t want Slovakia to become part of any military conflict because of some Article 5. Yes, we are members of NATO; we respect that, value cooperation, and fulfill our obligations, but as prime minister, I will do everything to ensure that Slovakia is never drawn into a military conflict,” Fico stated.
According to the official text of the NATO treaty, an armed attack against one or more members of the Alliance is considered an attack against all, and each member state is obligated to provide assistance to an ally. At the same time, Article 5 does not provide for the automatic deployment of troops: each country independently determines the actions it deems necessary, including the use of armed force.
Thus, Robert Fico’s remarks pertain to his political stance regarding Slovakia’s potential involvement in a military conflict, while the specific mechanism for fulfilling obligations under Article 5 depends on the state’s own decision and consultations with allies.
