European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reported that most of the migrants who entered the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta illegally have already returned to Morocco. According to her, none of them reached mainland Spain or other European Union countries.
She emphasized that the situation is under control and that cooperation between Spain and Morocco remains a key element in managing migration flows.
The President of the European Commission held a conference call with European Commissioners Magnus Brunner and Dubravka Šuica to receive the latest information on the situation in Ceuta.
“The good news is that, thanks to the effective work of Spanish and Moroccan law enforcement agencies, the vast majority of those who arrived illegally have returned to Morocco. No one has reached mainland Spain or other EU countries,” von der Leyen stated.
“This demonstrates why controlling our European borders is so important. We have a robust system, but it needs to be strengthened even further,” she added.
The European Commission President emphasized the need to remain vigilant at every critical entry point and to maintain close coordination among all authorities.
“At the same time, we need to analyze the lessons learned to make Europe more resilient,” she said.
She noted that she had received letters from several leaders and welcomed the initiative to hold an emergency video conference to analyze what had happened.
“The fight against illegal migration requires solidarity and a unified European response,” von der Leyen said.
