Forza Italia to propose Matteo Perego as candidate for mayor of Milan

In Italy, the Forza Italia party will propose Deputy Defence Minister Matteo Perego as a candidate in the Milan mayoral election, which is due to take place next year. This was stated by the party’s leader, Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, ANSA English reports.

Discussions with allies

Tajani said that Forza Italia will discuss Perego’s candidacy with its allies. These include Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party and the League party of Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini.

ANSA English describes Forza Italia as a centre-right party operating in the post-Silvio Berlusconi era. The decision on Perego’s candidacy still has to be discussed by Forza Italia’s coalition partners.

Matteo Perego’s experience

Matteo Perego, whose full surname is Perego di Cremnago, is 44 years old. He currently serves as Deputy Defence Minister in Giorgia Meloni’s government.

Perego previously served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Italy’s parliament, from 2018 to 2022. The agency also describes him as a manager from Milan.
