U2 frontman Bono compares Ben-Gvir’s rhetoric to Himmler’s — Jerusalem Post

Bono, the frontman of the Irish band U2, criticized Israel’s Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir and compared his statements about Gaza residents to the rhetoric of Heinrich Himmler, one of the leaders of the Nazi regime. The musician said this in an interview with Rolling Stone, the Jerusalem Post reports.

Bono’s statement

Bono drew attention to Ben-Gvir’s remarks made in a conversation with Rom Braslavski, who survived being held hostage. According to the Jerusalem Post, the minister said of people in Gaza that they were not worth life, should not live, and were not people. The musician compared this rhetoric to Himmler’s statements.

The singer stressed that he supports Israel while recognizing Palestinians’ right to their own state. He said that the question of whether genocide is taking place in Gaza is a legal one and must ultimately be decided by international courts. Bono also expressed surprise that Ben-Gvir continues to hold a ministerial post in Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.

In the interview, the musician also spoke about the influence of Jewish artists on his life, worldview, and work. He accused Ben-Gvir of damaging the image of Judaism through his statements and called the situation scandalous.

Ben-Gvir’s response

Ben-Gvir responded to the interview with an AI-generated video, which he posted on the social network X under the title Gaza to Ireland. The video depicts children from Gaza singing to Bono, asking him to help them emigrate to Ireland and urging him to listen to Ben-Gvir.

The video also claims that more than 1.5 million Gaza residents want to start a new life in a third country. In his conversation with Rolling Stone, Bono again condemned Hamas’s October 7 attack. He also spoke about the song The Tears of Things, in which he reflects on Jewish history and the war in Gaza through the biblical David and Michelangelo’s statue of David.
