Haakon became the new king of Norway following the death of Harald V
Following the death of King Harald V of Norway, his son Haakon automatically ascended to the throne on August 28. He became the country’s new monarch in accordance with the rules of succession.
Norway always has a reigning monarch, so upon the king’s death, his successor immediately assumes power. This is the origin of the famous saying, “The king is dead—long live the king!”
Following the death of Harald V, the royal flag over the Royal Palace in Oslo was flown at half-mast as a sign of mourning. At the same time, Haakon, who had been preparing to become monarch since birth, had already become the new king of Norway.
Haakon was born in 1973 as heir to the throne. In recent years, he has gradually taken on more and more responsibilities within the royal family and has often carried out official duties alongside his father.
The new monarch has convened an extraordinary cabinet meeting for 11:30 a.m., where he will meet with his ministers for the first time as head of state. During the meeting, Haakon will officially inform the government of the death of Harald V and his accession to the throne, and will also announce the royal name and motto he has chosen.
After the meeting concludes, the royal flag above the palace will once again be raised to full height, this time in honor of the new king. At the same time, the royal flag on the palace balcony will remain at half-mast in honor of the late Harald V. It will remain there until the funeral is over. Flags on official buildings throughout Norway will also be flown at half-mast until the day of the funeral.
Although Haakon automatically became king upon his father’s death, he is expected to take an oath of allegiance to the constitution before Parliament in the coming days.
