Georgia will not extradite Russian citizen Denis Kulanin to Russia
Russian citizen Denis Kulanin was allowed to leave Georgia and travel to a third country. The Tbilisi City Court ruled not to deport him directly to Russia and granted him seven days to leave voluntarily.
In 2025, Kulanin was sentenced in Georgia to two years in prison, and on August 27, 2026, he was pardoned. After his release, supporters bought him a ticket to Yerevan, but he was unable to leave the country due to the lack of an official deportation order.
Human rights activists feared that Kulanin might be returned to Russia, where he would face persecution. According to the human rights project APUS, he volunteered at Alexei Navalny’s campaign headquarters in Rostov-on-Don and spoke out against Russia’s war against Ukraine.
