Yandex obscured a Russian missile battery near Finland

The Russian service “Yandex Maps” superimposed an image of a forest over a Russian missile battery near Kronstadt in the Gulf of Finland.

Yle journalists determined that the forest image was copied from another satellite image. Meanwhile, the military facility remains clearly visible on Google, Apple, and Microsoft maps.

This refers to the area near Kronstadt, where the Russian Federation’s naval base and the Kronstadt Shipyard are located. Previously, “Bastion” anti-ship missile systems, as well as radars and reconnaissance equipment, were stationed in this area.

Finnish military expert and former intelligence officer Marko Eklund called this concealment absurd, since satellite images are still accessible to Western and Ukrainian intelligence agencies.

According to him, the decision to camouflage the site was likely an administrative one, but it was carried out so carelessly that the altered image is easy to spot.

Yle speculates that Russia is attempting to conceal a military facility in this way out of fear of possible strikes by Ukrainian drones.

Currently, Russian authorities continue to promote the state-run messaging app Max. Starting in August, users will be able to use its basic features for free without using up their mobile data allowance. The service has signed an agreement to this effect with the four largest mobile operators in Russia.

The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) of the Russian Federation has opened an antitrust case against Apple. The case stems from Apple’s failure to comply with the requirement to pre-install the Russian app store RuStore and the spyware-laden messaging app Max on iOS devices.
