Iran temporarily suspends 10% charge for foreign vessels

Iran has temporarily suspended the collection of a 10% charge on freight payments for foreign vessels carrying imported or exported oil, gas and liquid petroleum products to or from the country.

Decision on the charge

As Cyprus Mail reports, citing the semi-official Fars agency, the suspension of collection was ordered by the vice president for legal affairs.

The charge will not be collected until the government approves and publishes a list of goods to which it will apply.

Impact on transportation

According to Fars, the charge increased the cost of transporting oil, gas and liquid products. The agency believes that its suspension could reduce transportation costs and encourage foreign vessels to carry cargo to or from Iran.

The Cyprus Mail article also notes that the US naval blockade has severely disrupted seaborne exports of Iranian oil.
