Iran Rejected the U.S. Proposal for a Temporary Cease-Fire — NYT
Tehran rejected the temporary ceasefire agreement proposed by the U.S., which was delivered to Iran by the Iraqi prime minister. Iranian authorities stated that the issue of control over the Strait of Hormuz must be resolved before any ceasefire can take place.
Iran rejected the U.S.-proposed ceasefire agreement, which was brought to Tehran by the Iraqi prime minister. The Iranian side stated that it is not prepared to agree to a temporary ceasefire until the issue of control over the Strait of Hormuz is resolved.
According to The New York Times, Iranian officials emphasized that Tehran is not interested in a temporary ceasefire if it does not resolve the issue of control over the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s refusal came amid nearly two weeks of reciprocal strikes between the U.S. and Iran. According to CNN, Iran continues to attack ships in the Strait of Hormuz and U.S. targets in the Middle East, while the U.S. is striking military bases and infrastructure within Iran.
Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi arrived in Tehran after meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House last week.
Ahead of the visit, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the Iraqi prime minister could convey the U.S. president’s position, but that Tehran is not interested in further mediation by Washington.
The main obstacle is the U.S.’s irrational, excessive, and hegemonic approach, Araghchi said.
For his part, Donald Trump stated that Iran is “not ready” to reach an agreement and that the country’s leadership “has certain malicious intentions.”
