Iran claims to have launched a missile strike on a U.S. base in Jordan — CNN

On Thursday, July 9, Iran announced that it had fired ten ballistic missiles at a U.S. military base in Jordan. Meanwhile, Jordanian authorities reported that all the missiles were intercepted and that there were no reports of damage or casualties.

Following the attack, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps threatened further strikes against U.S. military facilities in the region if the U.S. continues military operations against Iran.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the missile launch. According to the IRGC, the target was the Azraq Air Base in northern Jordan, also known as the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base. During the current escalation between the U.S. and Iran, the American military presence there has been significantly reinforced.

The IRGC’s statement noted that ten ballistic missiles were fired at the base. Iran also threatened further attacks. “If the U.S. military repeats its aggression, other U.S. bases in the region will not escape a powerful strike,” the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated.

Meanwhile, Jordanian authorities reported that all the missiles were successfully intercepted in mid-air. Jordanian government spokesman Mohammad al-Momani stated that air defense forces “intercepted all the missiles and neutralized the threat.” According to official information, as of now, there are no reports of casualties, injuries, or damage.

The U.S. has not yet reported on the possible consequences of the attack or commented on Iran’s statement. In recent days, the situation in the Middle East has continued to escalate. Following a series of U.S. strikes on Iranian military targets, Tehran has repeatedly stated its readiness to respond to U.S. actions and warned of possible attacks on American military bases in the region.

At this time, there is no independent confirmation of Iran’s claim that it launched exactly ten ballistic missiles. However, Jordanian authorities have officially confirmed that the missiles were intercepted, according to CNN.

Despite this new round of conflict in the Middle East, Iran says it is not abandoning diplomacy and is trying to restore relations with the Gulf states. Officials in Tehran claim that the U.S. and the West have mistakenly interpreted their willingness to negotiate as a sign of weakness.

Overnight, Iran exported at least 10 million barrels of crude oil and fuel oil. According to analysts, Tehran may have acted quickly out of concern that the U.S. would soon tighten its control over shipping in the region again.

Iran reported the deaths of three Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps soldiers following new U.S. strikes. Despite declarations of a ceasefire, the sides continue to exchange attacks, and the situation in the Middle East remains tense.

The United States has announced a large-scale military operation against Iran. Over the past two days, U.S. forces have struck more than 170 military targets located near the Strait of Hormuz. Officials in Washington say the main goal of the operation is to weaken Iran’s ability to attack international shipping.

Despite declarations of a ceasefire, the situation in the Middle East has escalated again. On Wednesday night, the U.S. and Iran exchanged new strikes, and Jordan announced that it had intercepted Iranian missiles over its territory. Meanwhile, in Iran, the funeral for former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei continues amid ongoing hostilities.
