Iran has announced the development of a missile with a range of 15,000 km that will be capable of reaching the United States
Iran is working to extend the range of its ballistic missiles to 15,000 kilometers. Such a range would potentially allow it to strike targets on the U.S. mainland.
This was stated by Abdul-Nabi Musavi Fard, a representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader, during Friday prayers, according to The Times of India.
According to him, Iran intends to significantly increase the range of its missile arsenal. He also called for revenge against Israel and stated that Iran’s existing missiles are already capable of reaching Jerusalem.
Iran possesses the largest missile arsenal in the Middle East, which includes thousands of ballistic and cruise missiles. Tehran is also developing underground infrastructure for storing and launching missiles.
At the same time, experts at Defense Express note that developing a fully-fledged intercontinental ballistic missile will be a difficult task for Iran. Currently, the country is primarily developing short-, medium-, and intermediate-range missiles.
Experts point out that a range of about 12,000–13,000 km is actually sufficient for Iran to strike the entire territory of the United States, so the claimed 15,000 km may indicate an ambition to develop a missile with excess range.
Experts also suggest that Tehran may be drawing on the expertise of other countries. In particular, attention is drawn to the experience of North Korea, which has already developed the Hwasong-17, Hwasong-18, and Hwasong-19 intercontinental ballistic missiles with a claimed range of 15,000 kilometers or more.
At the same time, the announcement of the development of a missile with a range of 15,000 km does not necessarily mean that Iran already has a fully operational intercontinental ballistic missile with such capabilities.
