Italy has extradited a Chinese citizen to the United States, where he was wanted on suspicion of hacking. The case involves charges of data theft, including the theft of medical research results related to COVID-19.
This was reported on Monday, April 27, by Italian police, according to Reuters.
The individual in question is Xu Jiewei, who was arrested in Milan last July at the request of U.S. authorities, who charged him with wire fraud and aggravated identity theft for his alleged involvement in hacking attacks that took place between February 2020 and June 2021.
In a statement, Italian police described him as a "dangerous foreign hacker" who was handed over to U.S. authorities to face charges of criminal conspiracy, unauthorized access to computer systems, computer fraud, and identity theft.
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) alleges that Xu engaged in hacking and the theft of critical COVID-19 research data on behalf of the Chinese government.
