Canada submits application to join Joint Expeditionary Force — Anadolu Agency

Canada has officially submitted an application in the United Kingdom to join the UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF). This was announced by the office of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney after his meeting with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Anadolu Agency reports.

Canada’s application to join the JEF

Carney’s office said that the Canadian prime minister welcomed the United Kingdom’s support for the country’s participation in this initiative. During the talks, Carney and Burnham also discussed strengthening the long-standing defence relationship between Canada and the United Kingdom.

The JEF includes the United Kingdom, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden.

Defence industry and artificial intelligence

The heads of government discussed opportunities for cooperation in the defence industry through the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP). According to Downing Street, Canada became the first observer state in the programme in the summer.

Downing Street separately said that Carney and Burnham exchanged views on the opportunities and challenges associated with artificial intelligence. They agreed on the importance of cooperation between governments and the technology sector to address shared challenges and protect online safety.
