Canada imposes retaliatory tariffs on US goods
Canada has imposed retaliatory tariffs on US goods worth a total of CAD 27.6 billion, or about USD 20 billion. The measures took effect on Tuesday at 00:01 local time. According to Anadolu Agency, Canada’s counter-tariffs are intended to match US tariffs imposed under Section 338 of US legislation, “dollar for dollar.”
Rates of up to 50%
Ottawa is applying rates of 15%, 25%, and 50% to imports from the United States. Key product categories have been affected, including steel, dairy products, household appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper products, and electronics.
Canadian tariffs apply only to goods of US origin. Shipments that were already in transit on the day the measures took effect are not subject to the new tariffs.

After talks were halted
The escalation came after bilateral trade talks were halted in late August. After that, the administration of US President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on key Canadian goods, including steel, aluminum, lumber, and automotive components.
The US measures were introduced under Section 338, which grants the US president the authority to impose trade barriers in response. Trump has repeatedly criticized the trade imbalance between Canada and the United States, calling it one of the main reasons for the tariffs, and has also claimed that Ottawa is allegedly profiting from the United States.
