Democratic US Senate candidate visits Jewish family in Michigan — Jerusalem Post
Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic Party candidate for the US Senate from Michigan, visited a Jewish family last week for Rosh Hashanah. The visit took place amid controversy over his position on Israel and accusations of antisemitism, The Jerusalem Post reports.
A meeting at the holiday table
In a video El-Sayed posted on social media platform X on Sunday, he visited Elaine and Missy, a mother and daughter described as lifelong Michigan residents. The politician wrote that they discussed working together toward a “more just and peaceful future” for local communities and also wished them a happy Rosh Hashanah.
The released recording does not discuss El-Sayed’s position on Israel or his previous controversial statements. The conversation focused mainly on the food on the table. The candidate praised kugel prepared using Elaine’s grandmother’s recipe, while the hostess recited a blessing over fruit before the traditional Rosh Hashanah tasting of apples with honey.

At the end of the video, Missy told El-Sayed that she liked his views, including on healthcare.
Contacts with Jewish voters
According to the publication, El-Sayed has sought in recent months to build relations with the state’s Jewish voters. His candidacy has caused controversy among part of the community because of his opposition to a two-state solution in Israel, previous scandals involving streamer Hasan Piker, and his response to the attack on Temple Israel in the Detroit area.
The politician also recently held a private meeting with rabbis at Temple Israel. This came several weeks after his apology for previous statements that, according to Jewish Insider, could have created an impression of ambiguity over condemning the March attack. At the same time, more than 600 Michigan Jews signed an open letter pledging to vote for El-Sayed in the US Senate election.
