Carney welcomes idea of Canada’s associate membership in the EU — Deutsche Welle
In Strasbourg, France, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, during a speech at the European Parliament, welcomed the European Union’s “ambition” regarding Canada’s possible associate membership. Deutsche Welle reported this, citing his speech.
Shared values
Carney delivered his speech in English, French and German. He stated that Canada and the EU share the values of democracy, freedom, human rights, the rule of law and human dignity.
The Canadian prime minister stressed that his country is not an opportunistic ally and does not seek zero-sum agreements. According to him, Canada and the European Union have shared values that they have always defended and must continue to protect.
Before his visit to Europe, Carney also confirmed his desire to create a “unique alliance” with the EU. He noted that Canada and the European Union have common priorities and complementary strengths.

US reaction
The speech came amid Canada’s and the EU’s efforts to strengthen ties due to deteriorating relations between Ottawa and Washington. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the day before that the EU was ready to make Canada its first associate member. Such a status does not currently exist in the European Union.
US President Donald Trump criticized this prospect. He said he could impose serious tariffs or stop trading many goods with Europe if he considered Canada’s associate membership in the bloc a hostile act. Trump also called Canada’s possible accession to the EU “ridiculous.”
According to DW, relations between Canada and the United States have deteriorated sharply in recent months. The countries are engaged in a trade confrontation after Carney and Trump failed to reach an agreement in the summer.
