The Moscow Court of Cassation has upheld the prison sentence for 70-year-old doctor Buyanova

The Moscow Court of Cassation has upheld the prison sentence for 70-year-old doctor Buyanova

The Second Court of Cassation of General Jurisdiction in Moscow has fully rejected the appeal against the verdict and upheld the sentence of 5 years and 6 months in a penal colony for 70-year-old pediatrician Nadezhda Buyanova.

The woman was convicted on trumped-up charges of spreading so-called “fake news about the Russian army.”

The charges are based entirely on a verbal denunciation by the ex-wife of a deceased participant in the war of aggression against Ukraine.

During the court hearing, the defense insisted on overturning the unlawful verdict due to the lack of any real evidence of the doctor’s guilt.

The lawyers emphasized that Anastasia Akinshina, the woman who filed the complaint against the pediatrician after a routine hospital visit, had repeatedly changed her testimony.

Her words became the sole “evidence” for the prosecution, along with the remarks of her seven-year-old son, whom she had brought to the pediatric clinic.

The main violation in the case is the complete lack of objective evidence, as law enforcement officials were unable to provide an audio recording of the conversation from the doctor’s office.

Attorney Leonid Solovyov emphasized that under these circumstances, the woman’s right to a defense had been grossly violated.

Another defense attorney, Oskar Cherdzhiev, drew the judges’ attention to the fact that the case is based on the testimony of a minor witness, which is impossible to verify.

He emphasized that the 7-year-old boy was not even summoned to the courtroom, and only an FSB major was able to question him.

Pediatrician Nadezhda Buyanova herself categorically denies her guilt and considers the prosecution a politically motivated act of intimidation.
