Kazakhstan will impose a partial ban on wheat imports for six months

The Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan has drafted an order to impose a partial ban on wheat imports into the country for a period of six months

The restrictions will also apply to countries that are members of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

The relevant document, intended to protect the domestic market, has already been published on the country’s official e-government website.

Government officials adopted this decision during a meeting of a special interagency commission on foreign trade policy and participation in international economic organizations.

The relevant ministry has developed restrictions to protect the domestic food market and support local agricultural producers.

The exact date on which the temporary embargo will take effect will be determined immediately after the draft order is finally approved.

At the same time, the draft document provides for a number of important exceptions for strategic sectors of local industry and transit operations.

The ban will not apply to wheat imports by rail for the needs of poultry and flour milling enterprises, licensed grain elevators, and the state-owned company “Food Contract Corporation.”

Thanks to this, the country’s processing sector will be able to avoid a shortage of raw materials for its operations.

In addition, the government decree ensures the stable operation of logistics routes through the republic’s territory.

The restrictions will not apply to wheat imported into Kazakhstan via rail transit.

Deliveries made from the territory of one Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) member state to the territory of another EAEU country via Kazakhstan are also exempt from the ban.
