Houthis call Saudi Arabia’s airspace dangerous — Interia

Yemen’s Houthis have stated that Saudi Arabia’s airspace is dangerous for civilian aircraft. The Houthi-affiliated Humanitarian Operations Coordination Center (HOCC) explained this by recent attacks on Yemeni territory, Interia reports.

The center warned airlines operating in the kingdom’s airspace about risks to civil aviation and people’s lives. It also stated that the skies over Saudi Arabia would become an area of operations for the Houthi armed forces and disclaimed responsibility for possible incidents.

Exception for holy cities

The Houthis clarified that their warning does not apply to the airspace over Mecca and Medina, Islam’s two holy cities.

Attacks on Houthi positions

The statement came after attacks on Houthi targets carried out by Yemen’s government forces with the support of an international coalition led by Saudi Arabia. On Monday, government forces reported more than a thousand attacks, including on Houthi-controlled Sanaa.

For its part, the coalition said that 100 military aircraft conducted combat sorties over Yemen at dawn. Its spokesperson, General Turki al-Maliki, said that as part of Operation Dawn of Yemen, government troops could count on round-the-clock air support.

The war in Yemen began in September 2014, when the Houthis captured Sanaa and forced government forces to retreat. Since then, the country’s capital has remained under the group’s control.
