Shenzhen–Hong Kong–Guangzhou cluster retains top spot in global ranking
The Shenzhen–Hong Kong–Guangzhou innovation cluster in China retained first place in the 2026 global ranking of innovation clusters compiled by the World Intellectual Property Organization. This was reported by ECNS, citing the WIPO ranking released on Tuesday.
Three Chinese clusters in the top 10
China has three innovation clusters among the top 10 in the ranking. The Shenzhen–Hong Kong–Guangzhou cluster took first place, the Beijing cluster ranked fifth, and the Shanghai–Suzhou cluster ranked sixth.
By the total number of clusters included in the ranking, China has ranked first in the world for four consecutive years.

Ranking indicators
The WIPO innovation cluster ranking is based on three main indicators: the number of international patent applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty procedure, the number of scientific publications, and the volume of venture capital deals.
A spokesperson for the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region said the result confirms the innovation capabilities of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area and the financial ecosystem supporting innovation and technology. According to the spokesperson, the government will accelerate the development of innovation and technology, deepen cooperation with cities in the Greater Bay Area, and promote the integrated development of technological and industrial innovation.
