North Korea says it tested new weapon — Korea Herald
North Korea said it had successfully tested a new type of weapon in the presence of the country’s leader Kim Jong Un. According to Korea Herald, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) described the test as important for accelerating the technological development of weapons systems.
Pyongyang’s statement
Pyongyang did not specify which system was tested. Kim Jong Un, according to KCNA, described the test as a demonstration of cutting-edge defense technologies and progress in modernizing the armed forces.
The North Korean leader also said that this technology is important for the state’s war readiness and the future development of the army. According to KCNA, Kim Jong Un said that the adversary would be able to assess the significance of such technological progress on its own.

Pyongyang’s statement came two days after South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said that North Korea had launched two short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea. According to the South Korean military, the launches were carried out from the area of the city of Wonsan.
In photographs released by KCNA, Kim Jong Un is watching the test together with his daughter. The screen they were viewing displayed the flight trajectory of “Hwasongpho-11Ma-1,” which may indicate new hypersonic ballistic missiles. The screen also showed a range of 908.2 kilometers, while the South Korean military estimated the ranges of the two launches at 450 and 600 kilometers. Experts also suggested that Pyongyang may have altered the range figure to present the test as successful.
