North Korea says it launched a missile at a target 1,000 km away — The Hindu

North Korea said it conducted a training launch of an intermediate-range missile from the eastern part of the country on October 3. According to The Hindu, North Korean state agency KCNA claims that the missile hit a target 1,000 kilometers away in the sea east of the country.

Drill overseen by Kim Jong Un

KCNA reported the drill on October 4. According to the agency, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un watched the launch. KCNA described the launch as a test of an intermediate-range strategic missile.

The agency also said that the drill was conducted to train military personnel operating a hypersonic strategic weapons system.

Testing deterrence capabilities

KCNA said that the purpose of the drill was also to assess the reliability, effectiveness and mobility of the country's deterrence capabilities. The launch was the latest in a series of weapons tests conducted by North Korea this year amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
