King Charles III to discuss AI with company leaders in the United Kingdom
King Charles III will hold a meeting in the United Kingdom this week with leaders of leading artificial intelligence companies to discuss whether a shared set of principles is needed for the development of this technology. Participants will also discuss the use of AI for the benefit of society and the preservation of human dignity, Global News Canada reports.
Meeting participants
The meeting is expected to be attended by leaders of Nvidia, Google DeepMind, OpenAI and Anthropic, as well as the United Kingdom's Minister for Artificial Intelligence, Kanishka Narayan. According to the Sunday Times, participants will include Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang, Google DeepMind founder and head Demis Hassabis, and Vatican adviser on AI Paolo Benanti.
Buckingham Palace said the meeting would discuss the use of artificial intelligence in a way that benefits society and promotes the flourishing of people and the planet.

AI risks and regulation
The meeting comes amid new warnings about the potential risks of rapid AI development. Two Anthropic researchers warned that the technology's rapid progress could lead to human extinction in the near future. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei also said that companies need to slow the pace of developing artificial intelligence models.
Last week, Anthropic published a threat report describing the use of its Claude models by several actors for activities related to weapons development, cyber operations, surveillance and fraud.
The United Kingdom is Europe's leader in AI funding and the number of startups, and follows a relatively light-touch approach to regulating the sector, looking more to the United States than to the European Union. The UK's AI Safety Institute, established after the 2023 AI Safety Summit, gains access to models before their launch under voluntary agreements with major companies to assess their capabilities and risks.
