Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has appointed Fatima-Zahra El Mansouri, leader of the Authenticity and Modernity Party, as the country’s head of government. She became the first woman appointed to the position and was tasked with forming a government.

Asharq Al-Awsat reports on the appointment. El Mansouri was born on January 3, 1976, in Marrakesh. Her father, Abderrahman El Mansouri, was the pasha of Marrakesh for three decades and also served as Morocco’s ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.

Political career

El Mansouri studied in Marrakesh, France and the United States. She received a postgraduate diploma in business contract law from the University of Montpellier, a diploma in Anglo-American business law from New York University, and a degree in private law from Mohammed V University in Rabat.

After completing her studies, she opened a legal practice in Marrakesh specializing in real estate transactions and commercial agreements. In 2008, El Mansouri joined the Authenticity and Modernity Party, and the following year, at the age of 33, she was elected mayor of Marrakesh. She became the first woman to lead the city’s municipal council.

Government and party positions

El Mansouri later served as a member of parliament. In September 2021, she headed Marrakesh City Hall for a second time, and the following month became minister of national territorial planning, urban planning, housing policy and urban policy.

In February 2024, El Mansouri was appointed coordinator of the collective leadership of the Authenticity and Modernity Party. Her government will be formed as Morocco prepares to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Expectations for the new cabinet include social policy and reducing inequality between cities and less developed regions.
