King Haakon VIII of Norway delivers first speech as monarch

Norway’s new King Haakon VIII delivered his first speech as monarch on Saturday evening following the death of his father, King Harald. This was reported by YLE News, citing SVT and NRK. In his address, he thanked everyone for their support after King Harald’s death and noted his father’s work both as a king and in family life.

Thanks to his father

In his address, Haakon called his father a good father to Märtha and himself. He also explained the choice of the motto “Everything for Norway.”

According to him, the motto means striving to ensure that every person living in Norway has the opportunity to live freely.

Change of power

The king noted that the motto entails the nation’s responsibility to have a positive impact on the world. He added that it concerns a willingness to risk everything, including one’s life, for Norway’s freedom and independence.

The day before, Crown Prince Haakon became King Haakon VIII. According to NRK, such a speech is a tradition and marks the beginning of the change of power.
